02-01-2007 20:20 - Spare A Thought For Our Ancestors
Before you eat another mouthful of fish be aware that the missing link between us "land lubbers" and fish has been discovered on Ellesmere Island, Canada. The fossilised remains of a Crocodilian-like creature named Tiktaalik Rosae shows how sea-dwelling "fish" first walked out of the water more than 375M years ago. With a skull, neck and limbs similar to early animals, and scales, fins and jaw similar to a fish it showed that the evolution of animals from living in water to living on land happened gradually, with fish first living in shallow water.
I wonder if it would have been nice grilled with lemon and tarragon butter?

07-01-2007 22:29 - A Revolutionary Idea Or Just Plain Common Sense?
In a recent article focusing on Scottish over-fishing local man Don Macneish remembers when the seas around Arran on the Firth of Clyde teemed with life. With the waters now all but barren Ministers in the Scottish executive have just agreed to support Don's proposals for a unique, legally enforced fisheries protection zone off Arran.
A three tier zone of "No Catch", "Scallop Nursery" and a restricted "Marine Protected Area" for restricted fishing practices have been put forward. The experiment is set to mirror previously successful schemes carried out elswhere including such places as in New Zealand where Lobster numbers increased by a whopping 230%!!
This comes at a time when the official advice that Britons should eat more fish as a health benefit may be altered amid growing fears that the policy is threatening efforts to conserve diminishing stocks of cod and other popular species.
