06-02-2007 18:47 - Can Evolution Reduce The Size Of Cod?
Cod fishing or overfishing of cod can reduce the physical size of adult fish due to the effect of catching most of the larger fish. All nets catch larger fish - even nets with larger mesh sizes created in order to allow the smaller, younger fish to escape. This gives rise to an artificial lower average size for any remaining cod not yet harvested.
Researchers studying the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada have concluded that cod have now adapted to grow at a slower rate because their parents average sizes have decreased by 20% over the last 30 years.

10-02-2007 15:26 - The Search For Smart Nets Continues
The World Wildlife Fund and the Uk Seafish Organisation have paired resources to launch a UK prize under WWF's International Smart Gear Competition. The prize will be awarded for new designs of fishing gear that are aimed exclusively at minimising bycatch of marine life. The "Smart Gear" competition is seeking innovative ways and better designs of fishing gear to reduce by-catch on a global scale. It's estimated that 25% of the contents of all marine catches is killed and discarded.

10-02-2007 15:39 - Greenpeace Claim Dutch Illegal landing Of Thousands Of Tons Of Cod
Greenpeace has claimed that failing europe wide bureaucracy has allowed the landing of cod that hasn't been accounted for in fish quotas which is illegal. In a term coined as Cod Laundering they claim that Dutch harbours are the worst culprits. The fish is being harvested in the Barents sea and landed in ports all over Europe including the Uk, Holland, Potugal and Spain.
According to estimates from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES), 25% of all cod caught in the Barents Sea in 2005 was illegal. Canadian stocks collapsed in the 1990's and the Barents Sea is now being overfished in the same way.
When will these particular pirate fishermen learn? No fish = no income, managed fish=steady repeated income.
Greenpeace is calling on the Dutch and other EU governments to take global leadership in the fight against illegal fishing and to start cleaning up their own ports as well as provide funds for developing countries to better police their waters, where many EU fleets are now fishing following the depletion of European fisheries.
