The Crab & Winkle Story

The 'Crab & Winkle line' was the nickname of the very first steam driven passenger railway in the world, which ran from Whitstable Harbour (outside the fish market door) to Canterbury. It opened on the 3rd May 1830 with George and Robert Stephenson as supervising engineers.

The very first train, called the 'Invicta', was based on the design of the 'Rocket' and left Canterbury at 11.25am to the sound of the Cathedral bells, cannons firing and bands playing.

Day-trippers came from Canterbury to bathe in the sea and to enjoy the wonderful seafood which Whitstable was, and still is, famous for. Hence the name "Crab and Winkle".

Hello From All Who Sail In The Winkle

The Crab & Winkle restaurant was opened in February 1999 and soon established itself as part of the local restaurant culture. The brainchild of Peter and Eileen, it was soon packed to the gunnels with diners, sampling the seafood, wine and Whitstable views.

The idea behind the restaurant came from the often frustrated passer-by to the Whitstable fish market who were looking for a local restaurant to eat in. The empty roof space of the fish market was thus utilised and the Crab & Winkle was born.

Fast forward 7 years and Peter and Eileen retired and sold the restaurant, back into the family, to their eldest son Andrew and his wife Victoria. With a new look and a new menu the two partners have embarked on their own journey of discovery into the turbulent world of the restaurateur!
