Crab & Winkle "A Taste Of Whitstable"

"Food has become the reason for making the 60-mile journey from London. And, just as rural foodie towns such as Ludlow have developed the gastronomic theme with an excellent market and food shops to complement a clutch of first-class restaurants, so in Whitstable there is the harbour and the fish market, where you can breathe in the sea smells and whet your appetite before lunch.

Fish and seafood piled on mounds of ice by strong boys in white wellingtons are doubly appealing when there is a backdrop of fishing-boats bobbing outside and a mess of nets and lobster-pots and diesel drums on the quayside.

The big shed of the fish market has a seafood restaurant above, the Crab & Winkle, named after the Crab and Winkle railway line, the first passenger steam service in the country, that connected the quayside and Whitstable with Canterbury. It is a stylishly informal place with some outside tables that give a royal-box view over the harbour, the new wooden lifeboat station, the yacht club and out to sea.

After half-a-dozen native oysters, followed by a sauté of scallops and monkfish tucked on to a little bed of savoy cabbage and smoky bacon, the first-time visitor to Whitstable is asking to be pinched and reminded that this is English seaside food with not a flabby blanket of batter in sight."....Telegraph Travel

We are based at the historical harbour in Whitstable renowned for millenia for its oysters and recently its fish. We are right on top of the Whitstable Fish Market (our parent company) so we really are a fish restaurant with plenty of know how and a head chef who really appreciates the fresh seafood he is proud to prepare each day.
