Seafish Org Responsible Fishing Scheme - Boosted For 2007
Twenty three boats currently belong to the responsible fishing scheme in Britain which on the face of it doesn't appear to be a lot until you consider the scheme only started in May 2006. Even so Seafish Org is currently reviewing a further 100 boats for the scheme with new enquiries coming in every day.
The aim of the independently accredited scheme is to drive up standards by demonstrating the industry’s commitment to the responsible sourcing of seafood. Quite what this means in real terms is as yet unclear as I haven't looked into the finer points yet. That's not to say it's an unwelcome idea as the Whitstable Fish Market are fully intending to support the initiative as responsible fishing is a huge positive step forward in the drive for sustainable seafood sourcing for smaller retailers and restaurants such as ourselves.
Since we started on our crusade for sustainable fish we've noticed the quality of the catch has sky-rocketed and our fish displays are looking better than ever!
One item that has eluded us in our sourcing policy has been sustainably fished Scallops. The Whitstable Fish Market has been supplying sustainable diver caught scallops of the utmost quality but which have put the price beyond the reach of many customers. The new Seafish Org scheme has had application from an entire fleet of Scallop fishers in Falmouth bay so the Fish Market hopes to be sourcing these seafood delights in the near future.
Another strong supporter is Interfish in Plymouth, who have four vessels in the scheme with a further two due for audit in February.
Andrew Pillar, Fleet Manager, said: "The modern seafood consumer now wants to know the product they buy is not just fresh and of high quality, but is being caught responsibly and with consideration for the marine environment. Interfish skippers and crew are proud to be achieving this through the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme."
I couldn't agree more.
Keep your eye on the Fish Market and its new online seafood delivery wing Sustainable Seafood delivery.
